Meg

Admittedly this is not all that recent, but due to the fact that I am at uni and therefore can’t photograph any of my more recent work to upload I thought I’d put up a picture from about a year and a half ago that I particularly liked. This painting is of Meg, the friendly and much loved dog of a very kind lady who let my friend (a distant relative of hers) and I stay with her when we were at a uni open day at Cambridge. Although I didn’t take to Cambridge uni, I did have a lovely time visiting and wanted to thank our hostess somehow! So I sent her this painting of Meg:

Revival

I just remembered that I had this blog and haven’t updated it for almost three years!
A lot has changed in those three years, I still love art but don’t have time to do so much as I am now studying Biology at Oxford University. Taking art A level and being made to do conceptual-type things kind of put me off the idea of art college. I decided that I just liked the ‘appreciating the way that existing things look’ kind of thing. I have been doing some paintings, though, and in my next holiday I will upload some pictures! Watch this space!

New Painting, Seascape 1

Start Bay at dawn, acrylics. I’d been wanting to go up to Start Point at daybreak for ages and when I did it was pretty spectacular. I took a lot of photos, this painting was the result of some slight tweaking of composition to draw the image together.

Sorry, had to put in a load of spaces so the links didn’t get in the way.

I’ve still got my oil painting on the go, I got a little distracted by this one but I’m intending to get a bit more done on the oils today, considering that I probably won’t get the chance for a few days as I’m going to be away.

It would be nice to hear what you think…

Garden and Self Portrait

I’ve had quite a productive day today, I finished a painting of the garden that I’d had on the go for ages. Then I found a bit of primed board in the cupboard and did a self portrait, direct observation style.

This is the portrait, which, although I am quite pleased with it as a picture, I still do not think looks like me. It’s so much easier to do likenesses of people other than yourself! I don’t know what it is about it.

This is the garden picture, which I started from direct observation a few weeks ago and have been occasionally doing a bit from a photograph. I decided to just get it done today so I can get on to my big canvas.

The saturation on the blue is a bit weird in that photo, I did try upping the yellow quite a bit but it didn’t seem to have much effect, in real life the green is greener.

So now I have that done I can start on my big canvas, if I can find something to put on it. At the mo I am not feeling quite well enough to get up and walk 5 miles before dawn to take the correct photo, so I think I will have to bully a parent into taking me in the car…

The latest from my sketchbook

These are some of the drawings and sketches I’ve done recently, also a couple of paintings I have done so far this holiday. I have set myself a little target of doing ten paintings this holiday, but unfortunately I’m only on the third and there’s 6 weeks left, if the weather were a little better I’m sure I’d be more likely to get some decent photos and direct observation opportuntities. Anyway, I’d like to hear what you think about this stuff…

Breakfast, still life in aquarelle crayon, although I didn’t use much water as I put in a little too much detail and couldn’t bring myself to wet it.

Stokenham Church, aquarelle, which I actually dissolved this time. Direct observation from an extraordinarily uncomfortable position on a branch protruding over the road.
